Composer’s Commentary
If you’ve ever guided someone into meditation or hypnosis, you’ve probably used phrases like:
“Your body feels heavy and comfortable.”
“With each breath, you drift deeper into relaxation.”
“Your eyelids are becoming heavy.”
I like to think that this music says all of that, without words.
We could go on and on. These are all expressions that I might use to describe the atmosphere of this music…
“Allow your thoughts to drift, like clouds in the sky.”
“Time may feel like it’s slowing down…or fading away.”
“You are safe, supported and at ease.”
As I’m sure you know, therapists often use this kind of sensory-rich language to guide clients into a relaxed, receptive state. That’s exactly what “As Sleep Approaches” does – only through sound instead of speech.
This gentle music is designed to evoke physical and emotional relaxation while bypassing analytical resistance. It proceeds very slowly, inviting your mind to loosen its grip and your body to soften. With a little time, it can bring on an exaggerated sense of sleepiness along with feelings of safety that help the listener to let go. Much like a therapist’s voice, the tone of the music is soothing, and the mood it provides is comforting and profoundly restful.
As Sleep Approaches isn’t something you just listen to – it’s something you sink into.
“Where words leave off, music begins”.
~ Heinrich Heine
